Monitor using a pH meter and a TDS (total dissolved solids) or EC meter, testing the water regularly so you can keep it in the range your plants need. Meters are not included with our kits.

It depends on what you grow, how much you grow and what you would otherwise spend on produce. Running costs are electricity for the pump and any lights, plus nutrients and water.

Yes. Grown indoors with enough light and a suitable temperature, a hydroponic garden does not depend on the season or the weather outside.

Yes. Compact systems such as our 11 cup deep water culture kit fit on a bench or counter, and slanted NFT kits like our 36 cup system make use of height rather than floor space.

Change the nutrient solution every 2 to 3 weeks, or as the nutrient manufacturer recommends, and top up with water in between.

Filtered or reverse osmosis water is a good choice because it is free from chlorine and most contaminants. Tap water can work too if you test it and adjust the pH.

Yes, you can mix brands, but check that parts are compatible, especially electrical components, fittings and pump sizes.

You can lower the risk of disease by cleaning equipment between crops, using clean water, keeping light out of the reservoir to slow algae, and checking plants often so problems are caught early.

We answer product and setup questions by email, and a person reads every message. We do not offer installation.

Recent developments include app-connected monitoring, LED lights with different light spectrums and automatic nutrient dosers. The kits we sell are simple mechanical systems with a pump and, on the NFT kits, a timer.

Check and clean the equipment regularly, keep an eye on water and nutrient levels, and replace parts such as pumps or lights when they wear out.

We do not make environmental claims about the products we sell. What we can tell you factually is how each one works: our NFT and deep water culture kits recirculate the same nutrient solution through the system, and our lights use LEDs. The specifications are on each product page.

It depends on how much they run and how well they are looked after. Pumps last longer when they are kept clean and never run dry.

Tomatoes are large, heavy plants, so they need a system with room for big roots, strong support for the vines and plenty of light. Leafy greens and herbs are a better fit for the NFT channels on our kits.

Leafy greens need a nutrient solution, enough light and a system such as deep water culture or NFT. Lettuce and herbs are ideal starter crops for our 11, 36 and 108 cup kits.

LED grow lights generally use less power than older lamp types for the same amount of light. Check each light's wattage before you buy: our dual head grow light is 40 W.

We do not currently sell nutrients. Some growers use organic-labelled hydroponic nutrients; growing hydroponically does not by itself make a crop certified organic.

It depends on scale and how much you automate. A small kit, a light and nutrients is the cheapest way to start; larger multi-tier systems cost more. Current prices for every kit are on our shop page.

Yes, some systems can be used outdoors, for example on a balcony, as long as the pump and power supply are kept dry and the system is protected from extreme weather and frost.
